Many Heat Records Broken Thursday

Thursday, May 18th was certainly a hot day for southwestern Connecticut and all of the Northeast. Many of the big Northeast cities broke their daily record highs with temperatures soaring into the 90's.

Closer to home, we broke numerous heat records at our climate site in Bridgeport. At the location, the high temperature recorded was 93 degrees. That makes it the earliest 93 degree or warmer day on record for Bridgeport, or the earliest, warmest day on record. With that high of 93 degrees, that means we exceeded the 90 degree mark. On average, the first 90 degree or warmer day of the year occurs on June 27th. This year's happened on May 18th--That over one month ahead of schedule!

But wait, there's more! The temperature for the day that we had to break to set a new record high was 84 degrees set back in 1998. We didn't just break that record high, we crushed it by nine degrees! That is insane! As I mentioned before, we also had our earliest, warmest day on record. Lastly, this was the third warmest day ever for May. The warmest is 97 degrees, so we did get close. That 97 degree day happened later in the month, however.
