April In Review and May Preview

Now that April is over, I want to talk about what went down during the 30-day-long month. If you haven't noticed, it was a wet, gloomy month with April showers living up to its name, but despite the cloud cover and wet weather, we broke the record for warmest April on record for our area by only 0.1 degrees!

Temperatures ranged from a low temperature of 35 degrees on April 9th all the way up to a high temperature of 86 degrees on April 29th. The important thing that happened in April were not the above average temperatures but the drought relief. At the start of the month, our area was in either a moderate or severe drought; By the end of the month following over 4.82 inches of rain, the drought was diminished, leaving us with only abnormally dry conditions.

I mentioned the gloom we dealt with this April. In fact, we had 9 cloudy days (at least 80% cloud cover) and only 14 sunny days (less than 30% clouds cover) during the month. I don't know about you but I need the sunshine!

Now looking ahead to the new month of May, temperatures will continue to heat up from an average high of 63 degrees on May 1st up to 72 degrees on May 31st. Rainfall on average for May is 3.8 inches, which is not as much as the normal precipitation for April. Also the days continue to get longer with the sun rising before 5:30AM EDT and setting after 8PM EDT by the end of the month.

In terms of the actual forecast because it's rare to have an average month, May should feature near-average to above average temperatures overall and above average rainfall. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out! Hopefully we have more sunny days ahead! :)
