The Science Behind Nimbostratus Clouds

Nimbostratus clouds are often known as rain clouds because they produce rain. Even though this is a mid-level cloud, it is often found in the lower levels of the atmosphere and close to the ground. These are thick, dark clouds that obscure the sun, usually making for a rainy day.

These clouds typically form in advance of a warm front, which produces a gradual rise of warm, moist air, developing nimbostratus clouds.
