LATEST: Heavy Rain and Flooding Possible Friday

Heavy rain and flooding may move into the picture this Friday. The National Weather Service has put Flash Flood Watches in effect though Friday night in coastal areas of the Northeast. This means that conditions are favorable that may lead to flash flooding.

If we look at one of the models, like the 4km version of the NAM, it keeps the heaviest rain at the coast, where her two inches of rainfall is possible. Then in northern parts of the area, it is forecasting around an inch of rain.

The 12km version of the NAM is pretty similar, but it has the band of the heaviest rain more inland, so all of the area will deal with heavy rainfall amounts. According to this model, three to four inches of rainfall is possible. Now I think this is a bit overdone, but over an inch of rain is likely for all of the area, based on these models.

The accurate European model is trending on the higher rainfall total side as well, but it's not as bullish as the model above. If you look at the precipitable water forecast below from the European model, there will be a lot of available water in the atmosphere Friday, which can all fall on our area.

Taking all of this information in, here's our latest thinking on rainfall amounts Friday:

Up to two inches of rainfall is expected, but that number can either go up or down from here.
Another question is the timing with this rain. Rain is likely to fall during all of Friday morning, but in the afternoon and evening, it's still unclear whether it will be wet and dry. I'm thinking that rain will continue through the early afternoon, the clearing will occur for the rest of the day. This may chance though, so stay with Jackson's Weather for the very latest on this heavy rain and flood threat.
