Stratus clouds are the ugly, gray clouds that can produce a mist and are close to the ground. When these clouds gets very low, we can call this type of cloud, fog.
Stratus clouds usually form when warm, moist air replaces cooler, drier air or basically when a warm front moves through. When this warm air moves into and over the cool air, the water vapor that is associated with the warm air condenses into water, forming these stratus clouds. Now you know the science behind stratus clouds.
