For the year of 2017, the Summer Solstice will occur on Wednesday, June 21st at 12:24AM EDT. The Summer Soltice is the transition from the Spring to Summer seasons. This happens when the sun's direct rays hit the Northern Hemisphere at the Tropic of Cancer. The rays move over this latitude (23.5°) because the Earth is on a tilt. Also, on the first day of Summer or when the Summer Solstice occurs, it is the longest day of the year because this is when the sun is at its highest in the sky over the Northern Hemisphere. Now you know the science behind the Summer Solstice.
