The UV index is often used in the Summer months when the sun is at its strongest over the United States. What the UV index basically is a scale that helps you avoid harmful exposure to UV radiation from the sun. This scale goes from 0 all the way up to 11+. Depending on what the maximum number is on the scale for the day, that determines what you should do if you decide to be outside.

UV Index Scale

0-2 Low UV Index: Suggests for you to wear sunglasses and sunscreen if you burn easily.

3-5 Moderate UV Index: Stay in the shade during the midday hours and apply sunscreen to you skin every two hours.

6-7 High UV Index: Reduce exposure to the sun between 10AM and 4PM, wear protective clothing, and put on sunscreen every two hours.

8-10 Very High UV Index: Minimize exposure between 10AM and 4PM, wear protective clothing, and put on sunscreen every two hours.

11+ Extreme UV Index: Avoid any sun exposure between 10AM and 4PM, wear protective clothing, and put on sunscreen every two hours.

Now you know the science behind UV index.
