Winter Storm Inga is set to bring a moderate snowfall to most of the region Wednesday. In this post, we break down everything you need to know. We'll be continuing to update this article as more details become certain leading up to the storm and during it.
UPDATE: We would like to briefly share with you why our forecast and school predictions have changed this evening compared to earlier today. Right from the get-go when we started getting detailed about the forecast of this storm, we knew temperatures were going to be marginal. As of early this morning, the models trended warmer, bringing the freezing line right through the coast. This rain/snow line is incredibly hard to forecast, as it's exact position, which can mean the difference between a coating and half a foot of snow, continues to fluctuate, shifting by up to 20 miles north or south. We stand strong by our current forecast update we have put out. There is definitely some bust potential to this forecast, but our current forecast seems like the most reasonable solution. Thank you for your understanding and enjoy the storm.
Timing:
Precipitation starts at rain for most areas at midnight
Widespread snow starts between 5am and 10am from northwest to southeast
Snowfall peaks in intensity between 8am and 11am Wednesday
Ends between 11pm and 3pm Wednesday
Coastal Timing Wednesday:
Inland Timing Wednesday:
Temperatures:
Wednesday: Highs in the low 30s inland to mid 30s at coast
Snowfall:
Confidence: Moderate
Forecast: Coating to 1 inch at the coast, 1 to 3 inches inland (isolated up to 4 inches)
Heaviest totals inland
The models have trended warmer throughout the day Tuesday. We now think almost everyone will begin with a light to moderate rain, starting at around midnight, due to slightly above freezing temperatures. In Danbury and towns to the north, it may be an all-snow event, but it all depends on where exactly the freezing line sets up. This can be extremely hard to predict, so this storm will turn into a nowcasting event.
Then by Wednesday morning, everyone will changeover to to snow between 5am and 10am from inland to the coast. The snow will continue through much of the morning before ending between 11am and 3pm. Snowfall intensities may also be heavy at times during the morning for everyone. In terms of school predictions, a snow day is possible to likely for inland towns and an early dismissal is possible whereas there's the chance for either an early dismissal or snow day is expected for coastal towns.
Based on all the information we provided you, and by looking at all of the weather computer model guidance, we can conclude with this snowfall forecast below. We factored in snowfall rates, the type of snowflake, temperatures, and snowfall ratios to bring you this forecast. This snowfall forecast was updated at 4AM Wednesday.
