Winter Storm Benji Brings First Snow This Weekend

Tthe first snow of the season is ahead this Saturday as Winter Storm Benji brings a quick batch of snow during the day.

This storm will develop off the Southeast coast into a coastal low, strengthening as it moves up to the East Coast. This is the same storm responsible for bringing a rare, widespread snowfall to the deep South. Up to seven inches of snow even accumulated in Corpus Christi, Texas!

We're going to deal with similar snowfall totals in our neck of the woods. Expect the snow to begin as you wake up, likely between 9 and 11AM. The reason for the delay of the starting time of the snow is dry air at the lower levels. Once the snow gets heavy enough to moisten up the entire air column, then we'll see the snow begin to fall.

That snow will continue throughout the day before winding down during the evening hours after dinnertime as all the snow moves into northern New England.

The heaviest of snow will fall midday, where we will likely deal with snowfall rates up to 1 inch per hour. Temperatures will be at or below freezing so this snow will stick to all surfaces. Because temperatures are near the freezing mark, it will be a heavy, wet snow. If the roads are treated, I don't think we'll have too many travel troubles.

With all of that in mind, I'm forecast three to six inches of snow to fall on Saturday. If you're looking for an exact number, my money is on three inches. Therefore, it will be a light event to kick off the snowy season. We're New England, so we can handle it.

Thankfully, this snow will fall during the weekend, so just stay home and snuggle in front of the fireplace.
